Sixth Form Play - Metamorphosis
Thursday 5 and Friday 6 December 2019
As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning, from uneasy dreams…he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. His numerous legs, which were pitifully thin compared to the rest of his bulk, waved helplessly before him.
Kafka’s 1915 novella, Metamorphosis, conveys the torment of salesman Gregor Samsa, who wakes one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a huge insect (‘ungehueres ungeziefer’, or, ‘monstrous vermin’). Gregor is at first perplexed by this transformation, then horrified and finally abandoned because of it.
Our production features eleven performers playing Gregor, which combines that unified dynamism with the possibility of eleven individual voices. A further nine performers completes our ensemble of twenty students. The play will be performed in the Drama Studio, in traverse staging, creating an intimate atmosphere. The setting is a house, sometime in the past.
