Three Concerts, One Week: Celebrating a Musical Christmas!

The penultimate week of term marked the busiest Christmas period the BGS Music Department has experienced for many years, with three concerts taking place across three consecutive days. These included the annual Christmas Carol Concert, the second lunchtime concert of the 2025–2026 series, and the Community Carol Service, held in collaboration with other local schools and musical ensembles from across Bourne.

As always, our students rose to the occasion, delivering outstanding performances at each event and demonstrating both their musical skill and commitment.Below are reports from each event, written by some of the students who performed.

Thursday 11th December - BGS Christmas Carol Concert at Bourne Abbey - Chloe Cox, Year 12

Last Thursday, 11th December, saw our annual Christmas Carol Concert take place in Bourne Abbey Church. From orchestral performances to festive readings, over 150 students took part in what was a very special concert, with the Abbey packed full of hundreds of proud parents and family members. We are very grateful to Father Stephen for his support and for allowing the concert to take place in such a lovely venue.
The programme involved a wide range of carefully selected pieces, including the classic ‘Silent Night’, sung by Senior Chamber Choir and beautifully arranged by Mr Jones, ‘Noëls Pour Les Instruments’ by the String Orchestra, and ‘Pie Jesu’ by the Junior Ensemble, among many other stunning pieces. The sheer size of the Junior Choir, involving almost 100 students alone, is a testament to the dedication and passion of all teachers and students involved in the concert.
Many thanks to Mr Tomlinson and Mr Jones, who have both committed so much time and effort into organising and rehearsing this concert. I am very grateful for the countless opportunities they provide and for being able to be a part of such an amazing music department!

Friday 12th December - Lunchtime Concert at Bourne Abbey - Ffion Jones & Millie Jackson, Year 9

On Friday the 12th of December Junior Chamber Choir and a group of soloists performed in the second lunchtime concert of the school’s new series. It was a fun experience because we were singing one of the songs that we had been practicing in Junior Choir, ‘The Colours of Christmas’ by John Rutter. There were lots of talented musicians including pianists, violinists, and solo singers. After the concert we had a chance to speak to some of the audience, many from the Abbey’s congregation and we received really lovely comments about how much they had enjoyed our performances. We would like to thank Mr Jones and Mr Tomlinson for all their hard work and for making it such an amazing experience and we would love to have more opportunities like this in the future.

Anna Hartley, Year 8

I really enjoyed the opportunity to perform ‘Castle on a Cloud’ from Les Misérables, as well as ‘The Colours of Christmas’ with the Chamber Choir. All of the performers sounded brilliant and the acoustics of Bourne Abbey really suited the music. I want to say a massive thank you to Mr Jones and all of the staff members who came and supported us at lunchtime. We hope to see you at the next one!

Saturday 13th December - Bourne Community Carol Service at Bourne Abbey - Peyton Teague & Pippa Harrison, Year 9

On Saturday, the newest chamber choir had the amazing opportunity to sing as part of the community carol service for the first time. We were nervous seeing so many people in the audience but excited to make our debut in a non-school concert.

Our three songs went really well and performing them was so fun, as all our hard work in rehearsals had paid off. We have all come so far as this group was only made in September, and its been a great experience. It was so lovely to hear all of the other different ensembles and be a part of such a great service.
